science paths

Science Paths visualizes the citations of over 10.000 scientists from seven different fields. The result is a sea of randomness emerging by looking at hundreds of careers at the same time. While the visualization represents a scientific discovery which got published in the journal Science, it also invites to look into the mechanisms guiding the research. Can we reduce an entire career into one line? Are the ups and downs of scientific citations the measurement we want for success? What are the patterns created by quantification and what gets hidden away by this observation?
