Performance

The project is a multimedia installation that transforms a century of Winter Olympic history into an immersive, interactive narrative. Drawing on data from 22,560 athletes who have competed in the Games since 1924, it maps both the individual and collective dimensions of sport—connecting athletes, teams, and disciplines through data-driven storytelling.

Curated by metaLAB (at) Harvard & Berlin, the installation is part of Performance—the second of three exhibitions leading up to the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, hosted at the Gallerie di Piedicastello in Trento. Supported by the Fondazione Museo Storico del Trentino in collaboration with the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Performance reflects on a century of Olympic evolution through a visual and data-driven lens.

The installation unfolds through two complementary narrative pathways. All Together Now offers a sweeping view of Olympic history, tracking the growth of national teams, disciplines, and athletes to reveal the shifting dynamics of the Winter Games. At the same time, One by One zooms in on individual stories, bringing both celebrated and lesser-known athletes to the forefront and tracing their Olympic journeys in rich detail.

At its core, Data Storytelling makes the complexities of Olympic sport accessible and visually compelling, turning raw data into an engaging, exploratory experience. A video introduction by Jeffrey Schnapp sets the stage, guiding visitors through the exhibition’s narrative logic. At the heart of the space, interactive touchscreens link to an online platform, inviting visitors to navigate the dataset through an intuitive, visually-driven interface.

As the Winter Olympics turn 100, Data Storytelling does more than document history—it transforms it into an immersive, dynamic narrative, revealing the depth, drama, and evolution of a century of sport.
