DATA | ART 2025

I am delighted to bring together two institutions that have profoundly shaped my work and thinking: BarabásiLab, where I was a researcher from 2015 to 2017, and metaLAB at Harvard, where I have been affiliated since 2017.

On June 11–12, 2025, BarabásiLab and metaLAB will host Data | Art, a conference exploring the entanglements of data with artistic, scientific, and curatorial practices. This gathering critically examines how data configures aesthetic, social, and epistemic structures—shaping not just representations, but also the institutions and disciplines that govern knowledge.

Bringing together artists, curators, scientists, designers, and technologists, Data | Art investigates the material, political, and poetic dimensions of data in contemporary artistic and curatorial strategies. As data permeates every aspect of life—from structuring knowledge to informing AI—this symposium asks:

• How does data not only represent reality but also produce it?

• What artistic and institutional strategies are emerging in response to its influence?

• How can we engage with data artistically, critically, poetically, and politically?

Hosted by BarabásiLab and metaLAB, Data | Art is a space for exchange and reflection—a place to rethink the ways data is collected, interpreted, and mobilized in shaping our images, narratives, and lived realities.
